Reflecting on the success of the #gopafree initiative

As we reach the halfway point of 2025, it’s a fitting time to reflect on one of the sustainable initiatives we are actively supporting and the tangible results it has brought throughout last year. We are constantly seeking innovative ways to reduce waste, promote circular economy principles, and actively contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable planet.

In line with these values, we have partnered, for the last few years, with the nonprofit organization CigaretCycle to support their innovative #gopafree initiative, an effort aimed at recycling cigarette butts throughout Greece. As part of this commitment, we have seven special recycling bins installed in the designated smoking areas of our facilities to encourage proper disposal and recycling of cigarette waste.

During the course of 2024, this initiative produced remarkable results, with over 350,000 cigarette butts, equivalent to approximately 100 kg of waste, being collected through our recycling bins. These were then transformed into 20 kg of organic fertilizer and around 65 kg of new recycled plastic materials, showcasing the circular potential of what would otherwise be toxic waste.

Beyond the direct recycling output, the environmental benefits were equally impressive. Thanks to the recycling process, nearly 600 kg of CO₂ emissions were avoided, 31 kg of CO₄ was prevented from entering the atmosphere, and approximately 200,000 m³ of saltwater were protected from pollution.

At A. Hatzopoulos S.A., we remain deeply committed to supporting environmental initiatives that deliver real, measurable positive impact. The success of the #gopafree program is an example of how even small changes in behavior, combined with the right infrastructure, can lead to meaningful progress toward a better planet. We look forward to continuing our efforts and inspiring more sustainable practices across our operations and beyond.
