Although the storage of flexible packaging materials is important both to ensure they are safe to use (e.g. clean and contamination free) and that the are fit for purpose, for maximum performance, all packaging materials, are best used after they have acclimatized to the temperature of the packaging line environment, a practice well known as “conditioning”. Sudden changes of temperature and humidity should always be avoided, e.g. taking reels from a cold warehouse or, from a cold delivery vehicle onto an automated packaging line, will almost certainly result in poor performance.
The technical ideal solution would be to have controlled storage conditions in warehouses but this is likely to be economically prohibitive. The alternative, which as described above is also very essential , is to hold the materials for conditioning, in the packaging machine’s area, at least 24 hours prior to use.
